The information below will help you with what may be your first foray into a professional work environment.
RECRUITMENT BULLETINS
Qualifications for each position will be cited on each recruitment bulletin. Apply only for those positions for which you qualify.
APPLICATION MATERIALS
- Cover letters - This is your "foot in the door." What can you offer the firm? Research the company and demonstrate your interest in them. Spell check your materials and have an editor review them.
- Resumes - Academic background, volunteer work, hobbies, family life and civic affiliations together with your job background provide a prospective employer a well-rounded image. Professors and employers make good references.
- Transcripts - Original transcripts are rarely requested. Send either a downloaded legible electronic version or a legible copy of the original transcript unless otherwise noted in the recruitment bulletin.
- Deadlines - Deadlines are for arrival at the firm, not for mailing. If the firm provides an e-mail contact, send an e-mail stating that your materials are in the mail as of a certain mailing date. To your e-mail, attach your application materials, noting that you are sending them electronically as a back up. Some firms will not provide e-mail or phone contacts; that is their preference. Use only the contact information provided on the recruitment bulletins. The APFC must have one representative copy of your application materials and notification that you are applying for a position by the position's deadline.
- For internships at the APFC in Juneau - The APFC typically offers 2 or 3 internships. If you are applying for one or more of these Juneau internships, send a complete, separate application for each position. You may mail them in one envelope. One of these sets can also serve as the requisite sample application for any "external" internships you apply to as well.
INTERVIEWS
During a telephone interview:
- Write down the names and titles of the interviewers
- Provide a thorough response to each question
- Avoid rambling
- Prepare a few questions to ask
- Express your appreciation for the opportunity to interview
- Ask how and when they will inform you of the outcome
THANK YOU NOTES
Send a brief note or email of thanks to the firms for granting you an interview.
