The Alaska Permanent Fund was ranked the highest of non-pension funds, ahead of Norway`s sovereign fund and the Alberta Heritage Fund, in an evaluation of best practices conducted by the Peterson Institute of Washington D.C.
"Alaskans have always been proud of the foresight that we showed thirty years ago in creating the Permanent Fund, and now we can be proud as the Fund is held up as the model for structure, governance and accountability," said Michael J. Burns, Executive Director.
The Peterson Institute study, A Blueprint for Sovereign Wealth Fund Best Practices, released in April, 2008, ranked 33 sovereign wealth funds on structure, governance, accountability and transparency, and behavior. An additional 10 pension funds were ranked as well. According to the study, scores were based on readily available public information.
"The Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation has always been committed to publishing as much information as possible about our investments, performance and financial statements, well above what is required by statute," said Burns. "With the advent of the internet, we were able to make more information readily available to Alaskans, and this has contributed to our high ranking by the Peterson Institute."
